When I was a child, we would go on family visits to Atkins, Arkansas.  There you could get the best Fried Dill Pickles!! Atkins, AR was once dubbed the “Pickle Capital of the World.” The Atkins Pickle company was the major industry in the town of Atkins, AR for more than 50 years. In 1963, Bernell “Fatman” Austin was the owner of The Duchess Drive In. His restaurant sit right across the street from the pickle plant.  Bernell needed a gimmick to attract new business to the restaurant, so as a joke he created the famous Fried Dill Pickle. When he saw how excited the customers were over the fried dills, he set out to create the perfect batter that is still today a family secret.

This week, I was craving some of those fried pickles, and I was directed to Miguel’s Restaurant in Comanche. Miguel’s has a new spin on the fried dill pickle. THEY’RE SPICY!! The Spicy Fried Pickles with that cool ranch dip hit the spot.  It was exactly what I was craving!! I have eaten many fried dill pickles in many towns and I have to say Miguel’s Spicy Fried Pickles are at the top of the list.

Huge platter of Spicy Fried Pickles hit the spot!
